What It Usually Means When Your Pool Pump Stops Working

The pump is the heart of your pool's circulation system. When it stops working, water stops moving, and that means no filtration, no chemical distribution, and a pool that can turn green quickly.

A pump that won't run, won't prime, or makes unusual noises isn't always a sign of serious damage. Many faults have straightforward causes. But some do require a qualified technician, particularly anything involving electrical components or the motor itself.

This guide covers the most common reasons a pool pump stops working, what you can safely check yourself, and when to hand it over.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Before assuming the worst, work through these checks in order. They're safe to do without any tools or technical knowledge.

1. Check the Power Supply

Start at the most basic point. Confirm the pump is switched on and that the timer (if you have one) is set correctly. Then check the switchboard, a tripped circuit breaker is one of the most common reasons a pump appears dead.

• Reset any tripped breaker and try the pump again
• If the breaker trips immediately, stop, this points to an electrical fault that needs a technician
• Check that the power outlet or isolator switch near the pump hasn't been accidentally turned off

2. Check the Pump Basket

A blocked pump basket restricts water flow and can cause the pump to lose prime or overheat and shut down.

• Turn the pump off at the power before opening the basket lid
• Remove the lid and clear out any debris, leaves, twigs, insects
• Check the O-ring on the lid is seated correctly and in good condition; a damaged O-ring causes air leaks that prevent priming
• Refill the basket with water before replacing the lid if the pump has lost prime

3. Check the Skimmer and Suction Lines

If the skimmer basket is full or a suction line is blocked, the pump can't draw water properly.

• Empty the skimmer basket
• Check the skimmer weir (the flap) is moving freely and hasn't jammed
• Look for any visible blockages at the suction fittings in the pool

4. Check the Water Level

If the pool water level has dropped below the skimmer opening, the pump will draw air instead of water and lose prime.

• The water level should sit at roughly the midpoint of the skimmer opening
• Top up the pool if needed, then restart the pump

5. Check for Air Leaks

Air entering the suction side of the pump is a common cause of priming problems. Signs include bubbles returning through the pool jets, or the pump running but not moving water properly.

• Inspect the pump lid O-ring, replace it if it looks cracked, flattened or dry
• Check unions and fittings on the suction line for cracks or loose connections
• A thin smear of O-ring lubricant (not petroleum-based) on the lid O-ring helps maintain a good seal

Common Fault Causes at a Glance

Pump Won't Start at All

• Tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse
• Timer set incorrectly or timer motor failed
• Capacitor failure (the component that starts the motor, this requires a technician)
• Motor burned out

Pump Runs But Doesn't Move Water

• Lost prime due to low water level, air leak, or blocked basket
• Blocked impeller (the rotating part inside the pump that moves water)
• Closed or partially closed valve on the suction line

Pump Makes Unusual Noises

• Grinding or screeching: worn bearings inside the motor, a technician is needed
• Loud humming but not starting: seized motor or failed capacitor, a technician is needed
• Cavitation (rattling, gurgling): the pump is starved of water; check baskets, water level and suction lines

Pump Keeps Tripping the Breaker

This is a sign of an electrical fault, either within the pump motor or in the wiring. Do not keep resetting the breaker. This needs a qualified technician.

What Needs a Technician

Some pump faults are safe to investigate yourself. Others are not. Hand over to a qualified technician when:

• The circuit breaker trips repeatedly after being reset
• The motor hums but won't start (seized motor or failed capacitor)
• There are grinding, screeching or burning smells coming from the motor
• The pump has been submerged or flooded
• Any wiring, terminals or electrical connections look damaged or corroded
• You've worked through all the checks above and the pump still won't run or prime

Preventing Pump Problems

Most pump failures don't happen without warning. Regular attention keeps the pump running reliably and catches small issues before they become expensive ones.

• Clear baskets weekly, or more often during autumn when leaf fall is heavy
• Check the water level regularly, especially during hot Auckland summers when evaporation is higher
• Inspect the lid O-ring every few months, replace it at the first sign of wear
• Run the pump for an adequate number of hours each day, under-running the pump leads to poor circulation and puts strain on the system when it does run
• Book an annual service, a technician can check bearings, seals, impeller condition and electrical connections before a fault develops

Pumps that run dry, overheat, or work against blocked lines wear out faster. Keeping the system clean and the water level correct is the simplest form of pump maintenance.
