Restoring a Unique Pool Without Losing Its Character

This Mission Bay pool had plenty of character, but years of use had left the interior tired and in need of a proper renovation. The goal was to give the pool a fresh, modern finish while carefully retaining the distinctive features that make it part of the home.

Once the pool was drained, the extent of the preparation required became clear. The existing interior was stripped and mechanically prepared to create a sound base for the new finish. Particular care was taken around the pool's steps, walls, waterline and unusual raised boundary wall.

One of the most distinctive features of this pool is the collection of decorative stone faces and ornaments built into the wall above the waterline. Rather than removing these details, the renovation was completed around them, preserving the original personality of the pool while modernising everything around it.

A new light-toned interior finish was applied throughout the pool, including the large entry steps. The lighter finish completely changed the appearance of the water, creating a clean, bright blue that works beautifully with the sunny Mission Bay setting.

The waterline was also refreshed with subtle grey mosaic tiles. These provide a contemporary transition between the new interior and the existing architecture without competing with the decorative features along the wall.

The result is a great example of how an older swimming pool doesn't need to lose its identity to feel new again. With thorough preparation, a fresh interior and carefully selected finishes, this Mission Bay pool has been given a new lease on life while retaining the details that make it unique.
