What Is Pool Resurfacing?

Pool resurfacing is the process of removing the existing surface layer of your pool and applying a new finish. Over time, pool surfaces deteriorate, they become rough, develop stains, crack, or start to flake. When this happens, the pool becomes uncomfortable to use and harder to keep clean.

Resurfacing restores the structural integrity of the pool shell and gives you a fresh, smooth surface that's easier to maintain.

Signs Your Pool Needs Resurfacing

Not sure if it's time to resurface? Here are the most common indicators:

  • Rough or abrasive surface, catching on skin or swimwear
  • Visible cracks or chips in the pool shell
  • Persistent staining that doesn't respond to chemical treatment
  • Plaster flaking or peeling away from the shell
  • Fading or uneven colour across the pool floor or walls
  • Difficulty maintaining water chemistry due to a porous surface

If your pool is showing any of these signs, resurfacing is likely the most practical and cost-effective fix.

Resurfacing Options

Sparkling Pools can advise on the right resurfacing material for your pool based on its current condition, your budget, and how you use it. Common options include:

  • Plaster (marcite), a traditional, cost-effective finish suitable for most residential pools
  • Pebble and aggregate finishes, a durable, textured finish with a natural look
  • Fibreglass resurfacing, a smooth, low-maintenance option suited to certain pool types

Each finish has different characteristics in terms of durability, texture, and appearance. Sparkling Pools will walk you through the options so you can make an informed decision.

How Pool Resurfacing Is Done

Proper resurfacing is not a quick patch job. It requires careful preparation and the right application process to ensure the new surface bonds correctly and lasts.

Surface Preparation

The existing surface is assessed and prepared before any new material is applied. This typically involves draining the pool, removing loose or damaged material, and ensuring the shell is clean and structurally sound. Good preparation is what separates a long-lasting resurface from one that fails prematurely.

Application

The new surface material is applied evenly across the pool shell, walls, floor, and steps. The method varies depending on the finish chosen, but the goal is always a consistent, well-bonded layer.

Curing and Refilling

Once the surface is applied, it needs adequate time to cure before the pool is refilled. After refilling, the water chemistry is balanced carefully to protect the new surface during the critical early period.

Who This Service Is For

Pool resurfacing is suitable for:

  • Homeowners whose pool surface is worn, stained, or damaged
  • Property managers overseeing residential complexes or managed properties with aging pools
  • Landlords preparing a rental property with a pool
  • Anyone planning a pool renovation who wants to refresh the look and condition of their pool

Why Surface Condition Matters

A deteriorating pool surface does more than look bad. A rough or porous surface makes it harder to balance pool chemistry, increases the risk of algae growth, and can cause discomfort or minor injuries to swimmers. Resurfacing addresses these issues at the source.

Keeping the surface in good condition also protects the structural shell of the pool, reducing the risk of more serious and costly repairs down the track.

Our Pool Resurfacing Process

Getting your pool resurfaced is straightforward, here's what to expect from start to finish.

1. On-Site Assessment

Sparkling Pools visits your property to inspect the pool surface, assess the extent of wear or damage, and recommend the most suitable resurfacing option.

2. Preparation

The pool is drained and the existing surface is thoroughly prepared, removing damaged material and ensuring the shell is ready to accept the new finish.

3. Resurfacing

The chosen surface material is applied evenly across the pool shell, including walls, floor, and steps, to a consistent and well-bonded finish.

4. Refill & Balance

Once the surface has cured, the pool is refilled and the water chemistry is carefully balanced to protect the new surface from the start.

When is resurfacing recommended?

Swimming pool resurfacing is usually recommended when the interior feels rough, looks stained, starts flaking, becomes chalky or no longer responds well to regular cleaning.

category
What is the difference between resurfacing and renovation?

Resurfacing renews the interior finish. Pool renovations can be broader, covering tile replacement, coping updates, plastering or other improvements around the pool.

category
Is refurbishment suitable for older pools?

Yes. Pool refurbishment is often suitable when the pool structure is still sound, but the surface, tiles or finish have become dated, worn or harder to maintain.

category
Do you work on concrete pools?

Yes. Sparkling Pools provides concrete pool refurbishment and resurfacing options for concrete swimming pools, depending on the condition of the existing interior.

category
What does concrete pool resurfacing involve?

Concrete pool resurfacing renews the interior of a concrete pool with a suitable finish, improving the surface, appearance and long-term usability.

category
Can restoration improve the look of an older pool?

Yes. Pool restoration can improve pools with visible wear, staining, rough patches or ageing materials. The right approach depends on the condition of the surface and surrounding details.

category
Does every pool need a full renovation?

No. Some pools only need resurfacing or selected finish updates. A wider swimming pool renovation may be more suitable when several areas need attention at the same time.

category
What finishes are available?

Sparkling Pools can advise on plaster, pebble, Hydrazzo and tiled finishes. Each option has its own look, feel and maintenance considerations.

category
How long does a pool renovation usually take?

The timeframe depends on the condition of the pool, the type of work being completed and the finish selected. Smaller refurbishment projects may take less time than a full renovation involving multiple stages of work.

category
How do I know which option is right for my pool?

The right option depends on the current surface, pool age, visible wear, budget and preferred finish. Sparkling Pools can assess the pool and recommend a practical pathway for resurfacing, plastering or renovation.

Full pool and spa renovation in St Mary's Bay, Auckland, including Quartzon Galaxy interior resurfacing, new tiles and copings, lighting, heat pump installation, and filtration relocation.
In November 2011, my partner and I purchased a property with a swimming pool and spa. Having never previously owned a property with pool facilities, we relied on Grant, Julia and the rest of the team at Sparkling Pools to bring us up to speed with what was required to keep the pool in order. Combined with this, some pool equipment components had been neglected by previous owners; Grant made time to come and carry out a complimentary inspection of the pool, from a holistic perspective, and to give us detailed feedback on what improvements (heating, filtration equipment, covers etc) we could make, over time, bearing our budget in mind. The pool and spa are now looked after on a regular basis by Sparkling Pools on a specific customised maintenance plan. Denis (our dedicated valet man) comes on time, on the same week-day each time, and he does a great job maintaining the pool. We love the team from Sparkling Pools and we love the service we get from them. The pool and spa always look and feel fantastic, and looking after them is one job we just never have to worry about!

A full interior renovation of a large, elegant older pool on a beautiful Kohimarama property, including new Quartzon plaster, waterline tiles, copings, and LED lighting upgrades.
Our older pool was looking incredibly worn and really needed a complete refresh to match the character of our heritage property here in New Zealand. The team completely transformed the space. The new Santorini blue plaster and updated waterline tiles breathed completely new life into the area without losing its original elegance. The upgrade to modern LED lighting means the pool looks absolutely stunning in the evenings, creating a perfect atmosphere for entertaining. The entire process was incredibly professional, and the final result perfectly complements our home.

This project comprised all the classic elements of a comprehensive pool renovation; interior resurfacing, including some engineering adjustments; renovation of tile-work; full equipment upgrades and installations; and subsequent ongoing pool maintenance contract.
Last winter, Sparkling Pools undertook the renovation of our swimming pool. Sparkling Pools did a terrific job and we were delighted with the results. SPL’s performance throughout the project was very professional. Senior management constantly checked the work at different stages and they maintained excellent communication with us throughout. We are happy to commend Sparkling Pools to other Auckland pool-owners who might be considering pool interior renovations or equipment upgrades, particularly noting their reliability, their professionalism and the obvious pride they take in their work and their products. Subsequent to the pool renovations, SPL has continued to look after our pool on a regular basis and we are very happy to have them do so. With SPL looking after our pool, it is now one aspect of property care I never have to worry about.
