What Is Pool Leak Repair & Resurfacing?

Pool leak repair involves identifying where water is escaping from your pool and fixing the underlying cause, whether that's a crack in the shell, a failing fitting, a damaged pipe, or a deteriorating seal. Resurfacing is the process of stripping back or preparing the existing pool surface and applying a fresh finish, restoring both the appearance and structural integrity of the pool.

These two services often go hand in hand. A pool that has been leaking for some time may have surface damage that needs addressing once the leak is resolved. Equally, a pool due for resurfacing may reveal hidden cracks or voids that require repair before the new surface is applied.

Signs Your Pool May Have a Leak

Some water loss is normal, evaporation, splash-out, and backwashing all reduce water levels. But if your pool is losing more water than expected, it's worth investigating. Common signs include:

  • Consistently dropping water levels beyond what evaporation alone would explain
  • Wet or soft ground around the pool equipment or pool surrounds
  • Unexplained increases in chemical or water top-up usage
  • Visible cracks in the pool shell, coping, or surrounds
  • Loose or lifting tiles that may indicate movement or water ingress behind the surface
  • Equipment running harder than usual to maintain pressure or flow

If you're noticing any of these, it's worth having a professional assessment rather than waiting for the problem to worsen.

How Leak Detection Works

Accurate leak detection is the foundation of any effective repair. Sparkling Pools uses a methodical approach to isolate where water is escaping before any repair work begins. This typically involves:

  • Visual inspection of the pool shell, fittings, and surrounds
  • Pressure testing of the plumbing lines to identify pipe leaks
  • Dye testing to pinpoint cracks or gaps in the shell or fittings
  • Equipment checks to rule out leaks at the pump, filter, or valve connections

Finding the source accurately means repairs are targeted and effective, rather than guesswork that leaves the underlying problem unresolved.

Pool Resurfacing: When and Why

Pool surfaces don't last forever. Over time, plaster, fibreglass gel coat, and other finishes wear down, stain, or become rough. Resurfacing restores a clean, smooth, watertight surface and can significantly extend the life of the pool.

Signs Your Pool Surface Needs Attention

  • Rough or abrasive texture underfoot
  • Persistent staining that won't respond to chemical treatment
  • Flaking, peeling, or delaminating surface material
  • Visible cracks or crazing across the shell
  • Faded or uneven colour that affects the pool's appearance

Resurfacing Options

Sparkling Pools works with a range of surface finishes suited to different pool types and owner preferences. The right choice depends on the existing pool construction, condition, and how the pool is used. Options typically include plaster-based finishes, pebble and aggregate finishes, and fibreglass re-coating, each with different durability, texture, and aesthetic characteristics.

Concrete, Fibreglass, and Tiled Pools

Different pool types require different repair and resurfacing approaches:

  • Concrete pools are susceptible to cracking and surface degradation over time. Repairs may involve crack injection, patching, or full replastering depending on the extent of damage.
  • Fibreglass pools can develop osmotic blistering, surface crazing, or delamination. Repairs typically involve surface preparation, filling, and re-coating with a compatible fibreglass or gel coat system.
  • Tiled pools may experience grout failure, tile lifting, or cracking, particularly around the waterline. Individual tiles can often be replaced, or full retiling may be recommended where damage is widespread.

Sparkling Pools assesses each pool on its own merits and recommends the most appropriate repair method for the specific construction and condition.

Why Prompt Repair Matters

A small leak or surface crack rarely stays small. Water finding its way behind a pool shell can erode the surrounding substrate, cause structural movement, and create far more extensive, and expensive, damage over time. Addressing a leak early is almost always more cost-effective than waiting.

Similarly, a deteriorating pool surface becomes harder to clean, holds algae more readily, and can cause discomfort for swimmers. Resurfacing at the right time protects the pool structure and keeps the pool performing well for years to come.

Serving Auckland Residential and Managed Properties

Sparkling Pools works with homeowners, body corporates, and property managers across Auckland. Whether it's a backyard pool showing its age or a managed facility that needs to stay operational, the approach is the same: thorough assessment, honest advice, and work done properly.

When is resurfacing recommended?

Swimming pool resurfacing is usually recommended when the interior feels rough, looks stained, starts flaking, becomes chalky or no longer responds well to regular cleaning.

category
What is the difference between resurfacing and renovation?

Resurfacing renews the interior finish. Pool renovations can be broader, covering tile replacement, coping updates, plastering or other improvements around the pool.

category
Is refurbishment suitable for older pools?

Yes. Pool refurbishment is often suitable when the pool structure is still sound, but the surface, tiles or finish have become dated, worn or harder to maintain.

category
Do you work on concrete pools?

Yes. Sparkling Pools provides concrete pool refurbishment and resurfacing options for concrete swimming pools, depending on the condition of the existing interior.

category
What does concrete pool resurfacing involve?

Concrete pool resurfacing renews the interior of a concrete pool with a suitable finish, improving the surface, appearance and long-term usability.

category
Can restoration improve the look of an older pool?

Yes. Pool restoration can improve pools with visible wear, staining, rough patches or ageing materials. The right approach depends on the condition of the surface and surrounding details.

category
Does every pool need a full renovation?

No. Some pools only need resurfacing or selected finish updates. A wider swimming pool renovation may be more suitable when several areas need attention at the same time.

category
What finishes are available?

Sparkling Pools can advise on plaster, pebble, Hydrazzo and tiled finishes. Each option has its own look, feel and maintenance considerations.

category
How long does a pool renovation usually take?

The timeframe depends on the condition of the pool, the type of work being completed and the finish selected. Smaller refurbishment projects may take less time than a full renovation involving multiple stages of work.

category
How do I know which option is right for my pool?

The right option depends on the current surface, pool age, visible wear, budget and preferred finish. Sparkling Pools can assess the pool and recommend a practical pathway for resurfacing, plastering or renovation.

Full pool and spa renovation in St Mary's Bay, Auckland, including Quartzon Galaxy interior resurfacing, new tiles and copings, lighting, heat pump installation, and filtration relocation.
In November 2011, my partner and I purchased a property with a swimming pool and spa. Having never previously owned a property with pool facilities, we relied on Grant, Julia and the rest of the team at Sparkling Pools to bring us up to speed with what was required to keep the pool in order. Combined with this, some pool equipment components had been neglected by previous owners; Grant made time to come and carry out a complimentary inspection of the pool, from a holistic perspective, and to give us detailed feedback on what improvements (heating, filtration equipment, covers etc) we could make, over time, bearing our budget in mind. The pool and spa are now looked after on a regular basis by Sparkling Pools on a specific customised maintenance plan. Denis (our dedicated valet man) comes on time, on the same week-day each time, and he does a great job maintaining the pool. We love the team from Sparkling Pools and we love the service we get from them. The pool and spa always look and feel fantastic, and looking after them is one job we just never have to worry about!

A full interior renovation of a large, elegant older pool on a beautiful Kohimarama property, including new Quartzon plaster, waterline tiles, copings, and LED lighting upgrades.
Our older pool was looking incredibly worn and really needed a complete refresh to match the character of our heritage property here in New Zealand. The team completely transformed the space. The new Santorini blue plaster and updated waterline tiles breathed completely new life into the area without losing its original elegance. The upgrade to modern LED lighting means the pool looks absolutely stunning in the evenings, creating a perfect atmosphere for entertaining. The entire process was incredibly professional, and the final result perfectly complements our home.

This project comprised all the classic elements of a comprehensive pool renovation; interior resurfacing, including some engineering adjustments; renovation of tile-work; full equipment upgrades and installations; and subsequent ongoing pool maintenance contract.
Last winter, Sparkling Pools undertook the renovation of our swimming pool. Sparkling Pools did a terrific job and we were delighted with the results. SPL’s performance throughout the project was very professional. Senior management constantly checked the work at different stages and they maintained excellent communication with us throughout. We are happy to commend Sparkling Pools to other Auckland pool-owners who might be considering pool interior renovations or equipment upgrades, particularly noting their reliability, their professionalism and the obvious pride they take in their work and their products. Subsequent to the pool renovations, SPL has continued to look after our pool on a regular basis and we are very happy to have them do so. With SPL looking after our pool, it is now one aspect of property care I never have to worry about.
