Thermal Blanket
A thermal blanket sits over your pool to hold heat, cut evaporation, and reduce chemical loss. Use it whenever your pool is not in use to keep running costs down.

A thermal blanket is a pool cover that floats on the water surface, trapping heat and slowing evaporation between swims. It works by creating a barrier that reduces heat loss overnight and on cooler days.
For Auckland pool owners, a thermal blanket is one of the most practical ways to lower heating costs and reduce how often you need to top up chemicals and water.

A thermal blanket, sometimes called a solar blanket or bubble cover, is a lightweight pool cover designed to sit directly on the water surface when your pool is not in use. The air-bubble construction acts as insulation, slowing the rate at which heat escapes from the water overnight or during cooler weather.
## How It WorksThe blanket floats bubble-side down on the pool surface. The trapped air in each bubble provides a layer of insulation between the water and the open air. On sunny days, the cover also allows solar energy to pass through and warm the water beneath it, making it a passive heating aid as well as a heat-retention tool.
## What It ReducesEvaporation is the single biggest source of heat loss in an outdoor pool. A thermal blanket significantly reduces evaporation, which means less water lost, less chemical top-up needed, and lower heating costs over the season. For pools with a gas or heat pump heater, this can make a noticeable difference to running costs.
## When to Use ItPlace the blanket on the pool whenever it is not in use, overnight, during the working week, or over extended periods when the pool sits idle. The more consistently it is used, the greater the benefit. Remove it fully before anyone enters the water.
## Fitting and HandlingThermal blankets are sized to suit the pool shape and dimensions. A blanket that covers the full surface area performs best. Many pool owners pair their blanket with a roller reel to make removal and replacement quick and easy, particularly for larger pools.

Thermal Blanket, Common Questions
What to know before adding a thermal blanket to your pool.
More than any other single thing you can add to a pool. Most heat loss happens at the surface through evaporation, particularly overnight and on windy days. A thermal blanket sits directly on the water and stops that loss, which means warmer water, lower heating bills and less chemical loss. If you have a heat pump, a blanket is not optional if you care about running costs.
Evaporation carries away water, and UV breaks down chlorine. A blanket reduces both, so you top up less water and lose less sanitiser to sunlight. Over a full Auckland summer that adds up to a genuine reduction in chemical spend on top of the heating saving.
Yes. The air bubble insulating layer traps solar heat during the day and holds it overnight, so an unheated pool will typically run several degrees warmer than it otherwise would. Many Auckland pool owners use a blanket alone to extend their swim season by weeks at each end.
Blankets are cut to your pool dimensions, so we need accurate measurements including any steps, benches or irregular shapes. Send us your dimensions or we can measure on site. A blanket that does not cover the full surface leaves gaps where heat escapes, so accuracy matters.
For a small pool, it is manageable by hand. For anything larger, a roller makes the difference between using it daily and leaving it in the corner. We recommend a roller for most pools because a blanket that is inconvenient stops getting used, and then it saves you nothing.
Thermal blankets suit most pool surfaces and shapes, and can be cut to fit around steps and irregular edges. Very complex shapes or pools with permanent features may need a bespoke approach. We confirm this when we take the measurements.
Lifespan depends mostly on how it is stored. Leaving it out in direct sunlight when off the pool is the fastest way to destroy it. Stored away from direct sunlight and sharp objects, kept rolled or folded flat, a blanket gives good service for years. Chemical exposure also matters, so avoid replacing the blanket immediately after shock dosing.
Keep it on whenever the pool is not in use, which is most of the time for most pools. That is where the saving comes from. Remove it while swimming, and take it off during and after shock dosing so high chemical concentration does not sit against the material.
Manufacturer warranty terms apply, with full details in the documentation supplied with the product. Sizing and fit are the whole story with a blanket, and a poorly fitted one leaves gaps that undo the benefit. We measure your pool properly, supply a blanket cut to it, and can recommend the right roller for your setup. We have been keeping Auckland pools swimmable since 1992.
