Salt on Both Sides: Servicing the Peninsula

Whangaparaoa's shape is the whole story. Water on both sides and a narrow strip of land in between means salt laden air reaches essentially every property, and it does not much matter which street you are on. The practical consequence is that anything metal in or around a pool has a shorter life here than it does inland. Ladders, handrails, light rings, fixings, heat pump casings and the fittings inside a plant enclosure all corrode faster.

That is manageable if it is being watched. It becomes expensive when it is not. A corroded ladder anchor is a safety issue, and a heat pump with a rusted out chassis usually cannot be economically repaired. We check these during a valet rather than treating them as a separate inspection.

The peninsula also has a high number of pools that sit unused for stretches, either because the owners travel, the property is a holiday home, or it is let seasonally. Water that sits still with no bather load and no adjustment does not stay stable, it stratifies and it goes off. A pool left over winter with the pump barely running is the most common reopening job we do on the coast, and it is almost always cheaper to keep it ticking over than to recover it in October.
