Two Environments, One Village
Waipu has two quite distinct pool environments within a few kilometres of each other. Inland, on the farmland and lifestyle blocks, the issues are rural: tank water that is soft and low in calcium, bore water that carries iron and stains, and filters loaded with paddock and driveway dust. Down at the Cove, the issues are entirely coastal: salt, sand, wind and high UV.
Getting the diagnosis right matters, because the two look similar from a distance. A discoloured interior inland is usually iron from bore water. A discoloured interior at the Cove is more likely UV weathering or etching from soft water combined with salt. Same symptom, different cause, completely different fix.
The shared factor is occupancy. Waipu has a substantial holiday and second home population, and pools that sit unused from March to November do not simply pause. They deteriorate. Salt keeps working on fittings, water keeps evaporating, and any sanitiser residual is gone within a month. The spring recovery job is the single most common thing we are called about in this district, and it is also the most avoidable.
Being at the northern end of our range, we schedule Waipu properly with Te Arai, Mangawhai and the Matakana Coast rather than treating it as a one off trip.
