The reserve is the defining factor for pools on the streets that back onto it. Totara Park's mix of native and exotic planting produces debris more or less continuously, and it is a mix of large leaf that a skimmer will catch and fine material that goes straight past it to the floor. The fine material is the problem, because it breaks down in the water rather than being removed from it.
What that does is raise phosphate levels, and phosphate is what algae feeds on. A pool with high phosphate can hold a perfectly respectable chlorine reading and still go green, which is why owners here sometimes feel like they are doing everything right and getting nowhere. Testing for phosphate rather than just chlorine and pH is worth doing on any reserve edge property.
The stream and low lying ground near the reserve also mean that heavy rain moves material around more than it does on a dry, elevated section. Runoff carrying soil and organic matter into a pool after a storm is common here, and it is worth having the pool checked after a serious weather event rather than waiting to see what happens.
