Titirangi is the hardest suburb in Auckland to keep a pool clear in, and it is not close. Three things stack up. The first is organic load: kauri, rimu, nikau and the general bush canopy drop constantly rather than seasonally, and much of what lands is fine, resinous material that a skimmer will not catch. It sinks, it breaks down, and it feeds the water.
The second is tannin. Leaf litter and bush runoff leach tannin into the water, which stains the interior a tea colour and makes the pool look dirty even when it is chemically fine. Owners often chase it with chlorine, which bleaches it temporarily and hides the cause. It responds far better to filtration, oxidation and dealing with what is entering the water in the first place.
The third is water source. Most Titirangi properties fill from roof fed tanks, and roof water is soft and slightly acidic. Soft water will pull calcium out of a plaster interior and go looking for metal anywhere else in the system. A Titirangi pool topped up from a tank without adjusting hardness will slowly erode its own surface. Shade keeps the water cool through spring, which sounds helpful but simply extends the algae window.
