Orewa has an unusually high proportion of shared pools for a suburb its size, driven by the retirement villages, apartment blocks and holiday complexes along and behind the beach. Shared pools need a different discipline: heavier and more variable bather load, water quality that has to be recorded rather than just achieved, and a committee or manager who needs documentation they can rely on.
On the private side, the beachfront strip is flat, sandy and completely open to the easterly. Fine sand travels well inland, settling on pool floors and passing through worn skimmer baskets into pumps and filters. Salt on the same wind reaches fittings several streets back from the sand.
