Waiheke has no reticulated water supply, so every pool on the island is filled and topped up from a roof fed tank. Roof water is soft, low in calcium and slightly acidic, and a pool run on it without correction will slowly dissolve its own interior. On a plaster surface that shows as etching and roughness. On tiled or fully rendered pools it attacks the grout first. This is the single most important thing for an island pool owner to understand.
Tank supply also means water is finite. Draining and refilling a pool on Waiheke is not a simple decision, and over a dry summer it may not be possible at all. That changes the calculation on almost everything: it makes keeping the existing water in good condition far more valuable, and it makes any work that requires a drain down something to plan for the wet months rather than the dry ones.
