Volcanic Ground, Narrow Sections and Heritage Sites

Mt Eden sections are long, narrow and old, and the pools in them reflect that. Lap pools and narrow rectangular pools are common because that is what fits, and a long narrow pool circulates differently to a conventional one. Water moves from the return to the skimmer along a single axis, which leaves dead spots at the far end where debris settles and sanitiser does not reach properly. Return jet positioning matters here far more than in a standard pool.

The ground is the second factor. Maungawhau's basalt runs under much of the suburb, and pools cut into it decades ago were often built around rock rather than through it. Plumbing takes unexpected routes, excavation for any new work can hit rock at a shallow depth, and tracing a leak is genuinely harder than it is on a clay or sandy site. It is worth knowing that before assuming a repair will be quick.

Access is the third. Villa side paths were never intended for machinery, and on a heritage protected property the options for widening or altering access are limited. That does not stop the work being done well, but it does change how it is staged and what it costs, which is why we look at a site before quoting rather than after.

Mature planting on these streets drops heavily and drops late. Autumn here is real work.
