New Pools, New Problems: Servicing Millwater

Millwater is unusual because almost nothing here is old. That sounds like it should make pool care easy, and in some ways it does, but new pools have their own failure pattern. The most common one we see is a beautifully installed pool that has never had its water properly balanced, because the owner has never owned a pool before and the handover was fifteen minutes at the end of a build.

Fibreglass shells are less forgiving of chemical neglect than people assume. Low calcium hardness and low pH will not eat a fibreglass surface the way they do plaster, but they will chalk and fade the gelcoat, and once that starts it does not come back without a resurface. Getting the water right in the first two years is what determines how the shell looks in year ten.

Automation is the other Millwater characteristic. Most pools here came with a controller, a variable speed pump and often a heat pump, all talking to each other. When something drifts, the controller usually keeps running as though everything is fine. A pump quietly stuck on its lowest speed will still report as running while barely turning the water over. Checking that the system is doing what the screen says it is doing is part of a proper visit.

What we commonly see in Millwater:

• New pools where the owner received no real handover on water care
• Gelcoat chalking from persistently soft, low pH water
• Variable speed pumps running at speeds that do not turn the pool over
• Heat pumps undersized for the pool they were sold with
• Tight sections with plant boxed into confined, poorly ventilated spaces
