Exposure, Seasonal Use and Distance

Three things define a Kawakawa Bay pool. The first is exposure. Sitting on the Firth of Thames with limited shelter means constant onshore wind, salt and, on a rough day, a genuine amount of airborne sea spray. Anything metal wears faster. Water levels drop faster. Surface debris arrives constantly.

The second is seasonal use. A high proportion of properties here are holiday homes or second properties, which means the pool goes from full use over Christmas to nothing at all from March. Water sitting untouched with minimal circulation does not stay put, it goes off, and the spring reopening bill is almost always higher than the cost of keeping it ticking over would have been.

The third is distance. Kawakawa Bay is a long way from anywhere and it is not a place you get an emergency callout to quickly. That is exactly why a scheduled visit matters more here than in a suburb where somebody can be around in an hour. We build the bay into a planned route with Clevedon and the rural east so visits are regular and reliable, and so that small problems get picked up before they become a drained and refilled pool.
