If a Karaka pool has a persistent problem, bore water is usually behind it. Groundwater across this part of the district carries iron and often manganese, and both react immediately with chlorine. Iron produces a rust coloured stain, manganese a purple black one, and both bond into a plaster or pebble interior quickly enough that a single top up can mark a pool permanently if it is done without treating the water first.
This is entirely preventable. Testing the bore before it goes into the pool, and using a sequestering agent when it does, costs very little compared with acid washing a stained interior. It is the single most useful thing we can tell a Karaka pool owner.
Beyond the water, Karaka is open, flat and windy, with a lot of bare ground, gravel driveways, arenas and paddocks. Fine grit gets into everything. Filters here need attention more often than the manufacturer intervals suggest, and worn skimmer baskets let abrasive material straight through to the pump.
