Hillsborough faces south across the Manukau, which makes it the reverse of most Auckland pool suburbs. South facing slopes get less direct sun, so water warms later in spring and cools earlier in autumn, and the swimming season is genuinely shorter than it is a few kilometres north. Heating makes more difference here than in a north facing suburb, and so does a cover.
The slope brings the usual consequences. Pools are cut into benched platforms with retaining behind them, plant frequently sits below the pool, and decades of ground movement have worked on the surrounds. Cracked coping here is often retaining movement rather than a failed interior, and knowing which one you have determines whether a resurface will hold.
The Manukau is a working harbour with a lot of exposed mudflat at low tide, and the southwesterly carries fine sediment inland. It loads filters faster than owners expect.
