Herald Island is small enough that a service visit here has to be planned rather than squeezed in, and that is actually to the benefit of the pools on it. We build the island into a scheduled run rather than treating it as a callout, which means owners get consistent visits instead of waiting for someone to be in the area.
Being surrounded by water on every side means salt exposure is constant regardless of which way the wind is blowing. On the mainland you can be sheltered from an easterly. Here you cannot. That shows up first in fixings and fittings, then in equipment housings, and eventually in anything stainless that is not being rinsed and checked. It is entirely manageable but it does need to be part of the routine rather than an annual thought.
Mature pohutukawa are the other feature. They are beautiful and they are protected, and they drop heavily through summer: flowers, stamens and leaf, all fine enough to pass a skimmer basket and settle on the floor. Pools near them need more attention through December and January than they do in autumn, which is the reverse of what most owners expect.
