Living With Sand on the Eastern Beaches
Eastern Beach has one of the longest sandy foreshores in East Auckland and Shelly Park sits immediately south of it, so both share the same defining problem: sand travels. It moves inland on an easterly, settles on the pool floor where it reads as dirt, and passes straight through a worn skimmer basket into the pump and filter.
Sand in a filter bed reduces flow and therefore sanitiser distribution, and sand past a pump seal shortens the pump's life considerably. It is the single most common reason a pool in these two suburbs looks poor while every chemical reading tests fine.
The pohutukawa along the reserve compound it through December and January, dropping flower and stamen fine enough to bypass a skimmer entirely, right when the pool is being used hardest. Salt on the same easterly reaches rails, ladders and light housings several streets back.
Shelly Park's sections tend to be slightly more elevated and sheltered than Eastern Beach's flat foreshore streets, which reduces the sand load but not the salt.
