Rural Water, Clay Ground and Pools Set Apart

Clevedon sits on heavy clay, and clay moves. It swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and over a dry summer followed by a wet winter that movement transfers into anything built on it. On pools that means cracked and lifting coping, paving that no longer sits flush, and occasionally movement in the shell itself. When we look at a cracked Clevedon pool surround, the first question is whether it is a pool problem or a ground problem, because the fix is completely different.

Water source is the other constant. Tank water is soft and slightly acidic and will slowly attack a plaster interior if hardness is not corrected. Bore water is the opposite problem: hard, often carrying iron, and capable of staining a pool on a single top up. Neither is difficult to manage, but both need to be tested rather than assumed, and a lot of rural pools are topped up from a hose with nobody checking what is coming out of it.

Pools here are frequently a long way from the house, sometimes with their own pavilion or pool house. That is lovely to use and awkward to service: long pipe runs, plant in an outbuilding, and no line of sight from the kitchen window to notice the water going off. A scheduled visit does more work on a property like this than it does anywhere else.
