Older Pools Facing South
Blockhouse Bay shares its southern harbour aspect with Hillsborough and Lynfield, and that shortens the swimming season. South facing water gets less direct sun, warms later in spring and cools earlier in autumn. Heating and a decent cover make a bigger difference here than they would on a north facing section a few kilometres away.
The pools are largely from the 1960s and 1970s, which puts them among the older domestic pools in West Auckland. Most were built well, and the shells are usually sound, so a resurface with new plant is nearly always better value than a replacement. What matters is establishing whether the shell is sound before anyone quotes a resurface, because a rough, discoloured interior is cosmetic while structural cracking is not.
The Manukau exposes a lot of mudflat at low tide, and the southwesterly carries fine sediment inland. It loads filters faster than owners expect.
