What Is Pebblecrete Pool Resurfacing?

Pebblecrete is a textured pool surface made from small pebbles or aggregate set into a cement base. It has been a go-to finish for New Zealand pools for decades, valued for its natural appearance, slip resistance, and durability underfoot.

Over time, pebblecrete surfaces deteriorate. The cement binder erodes, exposing sharp aggregate that can scratch feet and harbour algae. Staining, cracking, and delamination are also common as the surface ages. When this happens, resurfacing is the practical solution.

Sparkling Pools provides professional pebblecrete resurfacing for residential and managed pools across Auckland. The work is done properly, from surface preparation through to the finished coat, so your pool looks good and holds up over time.

Signs Your Pebblecrete Needs Resurfacing

  • The surface feels rough or sharp underfoot
  • Visible cracks, chips, or hollow spots in the shell
  • Persistent staining that cleaning cannot remove
  • Algae growth that keeps returning despite treatment
  • The surface is flaking or delaminating in patches
  • The pool is losing water and the shell may be the cause

If your pool is showing one or more of these signs, it is worth having the surface assessed before the damage progresses further.

How Pebblecrete Resurfacing Works

Resurfacing a pebblecrete pool is a multi-stage process. It is not simply a matter of applying a new coat over the old one, proper preparation is what determines how long the new surface lasts.

Surface Preparation

The existing surface is assessed for structural integrity. Loose, cracked, or delaminated material is removed. Any underlying cracks or voids in the shell are repaired before resurfacing begins. Skipping this step leads to premature failure of the new finish.

Application

A fresh pebblecrete mix, aggregate bound in cement, is applied evenly across the pool shell. The finish is worked to a consistent texture and thickness. Attention to detail at this stage determines both the appearance and the longevity of the result.

Curing and Filling

Once the surface has cured, the pool is carefully filled with water. The water chemistry is balanced during the initial fill period, which is an important step in hardening and protecting the new surface.

Pebblecrete vs. Other Pool Surfaces

Pebblecrete is not the only resurfacing option available, but it remains a practical and cost-effective choice for many Auckland pool owners. Its textured finish provides natural grip, it suits a wide range of pool shapes and sizes, and it is well suited to the New Zealand climate.

Alternatives such as glass bead finishes, fibreglass coatings, or ceramic tile each have their own characteristics. If you are unsure which surface is right for your pool, Sparkling Pools can walk you through the options based on your pool's condition, how it is used, and your budget.

Our Pebblecrete Resurfacing Process

Resurfacing a pool is straightforward when you know what to expect.

1. Site Assessment

We inspect your pool shell, assess the condition of the existing surface, and identify any cracks or structural issues that need addressing before resurfacing.

2. Preparation & Repairs

The old surface is prepared, loose or damaged material is removed and any underlying repairs to the shell are completed so the new finish bonds correctly.

3. Pebblecrete Application

Fresh pebblecrete is applied evenly across the pool shell to a consistent texture and thickness, giving your pool a clean, durable new surface.

4. Fill & Balance

Once cured, the pool is filled and the water chemistry is carefully balanced to protect and harden the new surface during the critical early period.

When is resurfacing recommended?

Swimming pool resurfacing is usually recommended when the interior feels rough, looks stained, starts flaking, becomes chalky or no longer responds well to regular cleaning.

category
What is the difference between resurfacing and renovation?

Resurfacing renews the interior finish. Pool renovations can be broader, covering tile replacement, coping updates, plastering or other improvements around the pool.

category
Is refurbishment suitable for older pools?

Yes. Pool refurbishment is often suitable when the pool structure is still sound, but the surface, tiles or finish have become dated, worn or harder to maintain.

category
Do you work on concrete pools?

Yes. Sparkling Pools provides concrete pool refurbishment and resurfacing options for concrete swimming pools, depending on the condition of the existing interior.

category
What does concrete pool resurfacing involve?

Concrete pool resurfacing renews the interior of a concrete pool with a suitable finish, improving the surface, appearance and long-term usability.

category
Can restoration improve the look of an older pool?

Yes. Pool restoration can improve pools with visible wear, staining, rough patches or ageing materials. The right approach depends on the condition of the surface and surrounding details.

category
Does every pool need a full renovation?

No. Some pools only need resurfacing or selected finish updates. A wider swimming pool renovation may be more suitable when several areas need attention at the same time.

category
What finishes are available?

Sparkling Pools can advise on plaster, pebble, Hydrazzo and tiled finishes. Each option has its own look, feel and maintenance considerations.

category
How long does a pool renovation usually take?

The timeframe depends on the condition of the pool, the type of work being completed and the finish selected. Smaller refurbishment projects may take less time than a full renovation involving multiple stages of work.

category
How do I know which option is right for my pool?

The right option depends on the current surface, pool age, visible wear, budget and preferred finish. Sparkling Pools can assess the pool and recommend a practical pathway for resurfacing, plastering or renovation.

Full pool and spa renovation in St Mary's Bay, Auckland, including Quartzon Galaxy interior resurfacing, new tiles and copings, lighting, heat pump installation, and filtration relocation.
In November 2011, my partner and I purchased a property with a swimming pool and spa. Having never previously owned a property with pool facilities, we relied on Grant, Julia and the rest of the team at Sparkling Pools to bring us up to speed with what was required to keep the pool in order. Combined with this, some pool equipment components had been neglected by previous owners; Grant made time to come and carry out a complimentary inspection of the pool, from a holistic perspective, and to give us detailed feedback on what improvements (heating, filtration equipment, covers etc) we could make, over time, bearing our budget in mind. The pool and spa are now looked after on a regular basis by Sparkling Pools on a specific customised maintenance plan. Denis (our dedicated valet man) comes on time, on the same week-day each time, and he does a great job maintaining the pool. We love the team from Sparkling Pools and we love the service we get from them. The pool and spa always look and feel fantastic, and looking after them is one job we just never have to worry about!

A full interior renovation of a large, elegant older pool on a beautiful Kohimarama property, including new Quartzon plaster, waterline tiles, copings, and LED lighting upgrades.
Our older pool was looking incredibly worn and really needed a complete refresh to match the character of our heritage property here in New Zealand. The team completely transformed the space. The new Santorini blue plaster and updated waterline tiles breathed completely new life into the area without losing its original elegance. The upgrade to modern LED lighting means the pool looks absolutely stunning in the evenings, creating a perfect atmosphere for entertaining. The entire process was incredibly professional, and the final result perfectly complements our home.

This project comprised all the classic elements of a comprehensive pool renovation; interior resurfacing, including some engineering adjustments; renovation of tile-work; full equipment upgrades and installations; and subsequent ongoing pool maintenance contract.
Last winter, Sparkling Pools undertook the renovation of our swimming pool. Sparkling Pools did a terrific job and we were delighted with the results. SPL’s performance throughout the project was very professional. Senior management constantly checked the work at different stages and they maintained excellent communication with us throughout. We are happy to commend Sparkling Pools to other Auckland pool-owners who might be considering pool interior renovations or equipment upgrades, particularly noting their reliability, their professionalism and the obvious pride they take in their work and their products. Subsequent to the pool renovations, SPL has continued to look after our pool on a regular basis and we are very happy to have them do so. With SPL looking after our pool, it is now one aspect of property care I never have to worry about.
