What Is a Glass Bead Pool Finish?

A glass bead pool finish is a high-quality interior surface coating made from finely crushed or rounded glass beads blended into a cement-based render. The result is a surface that catches light beautifully, feels smooth underfoot, and resists the staining and etching that can affect older plaster finishes.

It's a popular choice for Auckland homeowners who want a pool that looks as good as it performs, and holds up well over time.

Why Choose Glass Bead Over Standard Plaster?

Standard white plaster has been the go-to pool finish for decades, but it has limitations. It can roughen up, stain, and discolour within a few years, especially in pools that see heavy use or fluctuating water chemistry.

Glass bead finishes offer a meaningful step up:

  • Smoother surface, less abrasive on skin and feet
  • Better light reflection, the glass particles create a subtle shimmer in the water
  • Improved stain resistance, the denser surface is harder for algae and minerals to grip
  • Longer service life, when applied correctly and maintained well, glass bead finishes typically outlast standard plaster
  • Colour options, available in a range of tones to suit your pool's surroundings

Who Is This Finish Suited To?

Glass bead finishes suit a wide range of pools, from older pools being renovated to new builds looking for a premium interior surface. It's a practical choice for:

  • Residential pools where aesthetics and comfort matter
  • Managed properties such as body corporates or rental homes that need a durable, low-maintenance surface
  • Pools being replastered after the existing surface has deteriorated, cracked, or stained

If your current pool surface feels rough, looks patchy, or has developed persistent staining that cleaning won't fix, a glass bead refinish is worth considering.

How Sparkling Pools Applies a Glass Bead Finish

Applying a glass bead finish is skilled work. The existing surface needs to be properly prepared, any loose or damaged plaster must be removed, the shell cleaned down, and the substrate assessed before new material goes on.

Sparkling Pools handles the full process: surface preparation, application of the glass bead render, and the critical start-up period where water chemistry is carefully managed to cure the new finish correctly. Rushing or skipping the curing process is one of the most common causes of premature surface failure, so this step is taken seriously.

Caring for a Glass Bead Finish

Once your new finish has cured, ongoing care is straightforward. Keeping water chemistry balanced is the single most important factor in preserving the surface. Aggressive water, whether too acidic or too alkaline, will shorten the life of any pool finish, including glass bead.

Sparkling Pools can support you with regular pool maintenance after the renovation is complete, helping to protect your investment and keep the surface looking its best.

Ready to Refresh Your Pool?

If your pool's interior surface is past its best, a glass bead finish is a practical, attractive upgrade. Sparkling Pools works with residential and managed property owners across Auckland to deliver pool plastering and finishing done properly.

How the Glass Bead Finish Process Works

From first look to first swim, here's what to expect when Sparkling Pools refinishes your pool.

1. Site Assessment

We inspect your pool's existing surface, identify any structural issues, and confirm the scope of work before anything starts.

2. Surface Preparation

The old plaster is removed and the shell is thoroughly cleaned and prepared to ensure the new finish bonds correctly.

3. Glass Bead Application

The glass bead render is applied evenly across the pool interior by our experienced team, with attention to edges, steps, and fittings.

4. Curing & Fill

The pool is filled and water chemistry is carefully managed during the curing period to protect the new surface and set it up for long-term performance.

When is resurfacing recommended?

Swimming pool resurfacing is usually recommended when the interior feels rough, looks stained, starts flaking, becomes chalky or no longer responds well to regular cleaning.

category
What is the difference between resurfacing and renovation?

Resurfacing renews the interior finish. Pool renovations can be broader, covering tile replacement, coping updates, plastering or other improvements around the pool.

category
Is refurbishment suitable for older pools?

Yes. Pool refurbishment is often suitable when the pool structure is still sound, but the surface, tiles or finish have become dated, worn or harder to maintain.

category
Do you work on concrete pools?

Yes. Sparkling Pools provides concrete pool refurbishment and resurfacing options for concrete swimming pools, depending on the condition of the existing interior.

category
What does concrete pool resurfacing involve?

Concrete pool resurfacing renews the interior of a concrete pool with a suitable finish, improving the surface, appearance and long-term usability.

category
Can restoration improve the look of an older pool?

Yes. Pool restoration can improve pools with visible wear, staining, rough patches or ageing materials. The right approach depends on the condition of the surface and surrounding details.

category
Does every pool need a full renovation?

No. Some pools only need resurfacing or selected finish updates. A wider swimming pool renovation may be more suitable when several areas need attention at the same time.

category
What finishes are available?

Sparkling Pools can advise on plaster, pebble, Hydrazzo and tiled finishes. Each option has its own look, feel and maintenance considerations.

category
How long does a pool renovation usually take?

The timeframe depends on the condition of the pool, the type of work being completed and the finish selected. Smaller refurbishment projects may take less time than a full renovation involving multiple stages of work.

category
How do I know which option is right for my pool?

The right option depends on the current surface, pool age, visible wear, budget and preferred finish. Sparkling Pools can assess the pool and recommend a practical pathway for resurfacing, plastering or renovation.

Full pool and spa renovation in St Mary's Bay, Auckland, including Quartzon Galaxy interior resurfacing, new tiles and copings, lighting, heat pump installation, and filtration relocation.
In November 2011, my partner and I purchased a property with a swimming pool and spa. Having never previously owned a property with pool facilities, we relied on Grant, Julia and the rest of the team at Sparkling Pools to bring us up to speed with what was required to keep the pool in order. Combined with this, some pool equipment components had been neglected by previous owners; Grant made time to come and carry out a complimentary inspection of the pool, from a holistic perspective, and to give us detailed feedback on what improvements (heating, filtration equipment, covers etc) we could make, over time, bearing our budget in mind. The pool and spa are now looked after on a regular basis by Sparkling Pools on a specific customised maintenance plan. Denis (our dedicated valet man) comes on time, on the same week-day each time, and he does a great job maintaining the pool. We love the team from Sparkling Pools and we love the service we get from them. The pool and spa always look and feel fantastic, and looking after them is one job we just never have to worry about!

A full interior renovation of a large, elegant older pool on a beautiful Kohimarama property, including new Quartzon plaster, waterline tiles, copings, and LED lighting upgrades.
Our older pool was looking incredibly worn and really needed a complete refresh to match the character of our heritage property here in New Zealand. The team completely transformed the space. The new Santorini blue plaster and updated waterline tiles breathed completely new life into the area without losing its original elegance. The upgrade to modern LED lighting means the pool looks absolutely stunning in the evenings, creating a perfect atmosphere for entertaining. The entire process was incredibly professional, and the final result perfectly complements our home.

This project comprised all the classic elements of a comprehensive pool renovation; interior resurfacing, including some engineering adjustments; renovation of tile-work; full equipment upgrades and installations; and subsequent ongoing pool maintenance contract.
Last winter, Sparkling Pools undertook the renovation of our swimming pool. Sparkling Pools did a terrific job and we were delighted with the results. SPL’s performance throughout the project was very professional. Senior management constantly checked the work at different stages and they maintained excellent communication with us throughout. We are happy to commend Sparkling Pools to other Auckland pool-owners who might be considering pool interior renovations or equipment upgrades, particularly noting their reliability, their professionalism and the obvious pride they take in their work and their products. Subsequent to the pool renovations, SPL has continued to look after our pool on a regular basis and we are very happy to have them do so. With SPL looking after our pool, it is now one aspect of property care I never have to worry about.
